High-wire
writing
Over the years, I've written stories that have been featured on
the Michigan wire of The Associated Press numerous times. Thanks
to the AP, stories with my byline have run in many Michigan and
Wisconsin newspapers such as the Detroit Free Press, The Flint Journal,
the Lansing State Journal and the Menominee EagleHerald, among others.
Most often, my stories were excerpted for a daily
"Upper Peninsula Briefs" segment, but four of my bylined
feature stories were posted on the Michigan AP's member exchange.
Here's a listing of my significant stories that have run on the
wire:
Ontonagon phone company
marks 125th anniversary
This September 30, 2002 story marked the anniversary
of one of the oldest phone companies in Michigan. I also shot the
art for this story. The story (and photo) ran in The Detroit News.
Weather observer keeps an eye on snow in U.P.
This December 17, 2001 story looking at efforts to
track snowfall in the Upper Peninsula was one of my most popular.
The story ran in the Lansing State Journal, Petoskey News-Review,
The Daily Press of Escanaba, the Traverse City Record-Eagle, The
Muskegon Chronicle, The Daily Telegram of Adrian and EagleHerald
of Marinette, Wis. and Menominee, Mich.
County police agencies get leg up with canine cops
My first major story on the state AP, this story --
co-written with Dan Roblee -- details local law-enforcement agencies
utilizing dogs for police work. Roblee wrote most of the piece,
and I did some follow-up and some addition. The story ran on April
16, 2001, and was published in the Detroit News.
Michigan Tech among nerdiest colleges, book says
A short, non-bylined story looking at a college-guidance
book rating the local university as among the "nerdiest."
The July 2, 2002 story ran on the front page of the July 12, 2002
edition of The Flint Journal.
Old friends open up new computer service center
Running on October 29, 2001, this story features two
lifelong friends going into business together. I also took the photo
for the story. I never received tearsheets from this story, but
the friends commented to me that their downstate relatives saw the
story in their local paper.
